Resume Review

After submitting your application, your resume will be reviewed to determine qualification for the position, You may or may not be contacted for a brief informal phone interview depending on the applied position. The interview is not required. Once a decision is made you will be contacted of the verdict,  

You've Been Selected

Congratulations! You’re now a candidate for hire. Please note that the hiring process takes approximately three (3) to five (5) months, but this is all dependent on the applicant’s involvement. The following are the next steps in the hiring process. 

 
Position Testing

Some positions require testing before moving to the next stage of the hiring process. Positions such as 911 Operators who are required to take the Criticall, Forensics Positions the TKE/Mock Crime Scene, and Sponsored Deputies are required to do the Physical Assessment Test (PAT). 

 
Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA)

Once hired you will need to schedule a Computer Voice Stress Analysis test. The CVSA is a type of Lie Detection test. You will be required to fill out a packet containing various questions of what you may be asked during your session. You may be asked to elaborate some of your answers. 

 
The Background Check

All applicants must receive a Complete Background Check which can take approximately 3-5 Weeks. Background checks include the following:

  • Driving Record
  • Credit Check
  • Criminal History
  • Medical Exam/Drug Screen
  • Psychological Evaluation for certain Positions only (After Conditional Offer)

 

The Following documents will not be needed until your file has been selected to begin a background investigation.

The Applicant Document Checklist provides a list of the documents that may be needed from you in the future. Please be advised that the original documents will need to be verified.

The Valencia Student Consent Form must be completed by applicants who have attended Valencia College (formerly known as Valencia Community College).

The Military Records Request Form must be completed by applicants whose files have been selected to begin a background investigation, regardless if whether the applicant has served in the military or not. If you were never in the military, complete Section I, numbers 1-4. Write “did not serve in the military” in box number 5a, Branch of Service. Sign at the bottom in Section III, number 3.

 
Conditional Offer

Once your background check is complete you will be required to have a medical exam, which will include a drug screening. Certain positions will require a psychiatric evaluation before the hiring process is finalized. 

Final Offer

You did it. You made it through the hiring process.

    • 15 Push-Ups in 1 Minute (Males), 10 Push-Ups in 1 Minute (Females)
    • 25 Sit-Ups in 1 Minute (Males), 17 Sit-Ups in 1 Minute (Females)
  • Voice Stress Analysis
  • Ride-Along (Optional)
  • Complete Background Check
    • Driving Record
    • Credit Check
    • Criminal History
  • Medical Exam/Drug Screen and Psychological Evaluation (After Conditional Offer)
The Academy

This program is designed to prepare individuals for entry level positions in law enforcement, such as police officers and deputy sheriffs.

  • Valencia College Criminal Justice Institute (8600 Valencia College Lane, Orlando, Florida 32825)
  • Duration
    • 5 Months (770 Hours)
    • Monday thru Thursday
      • 6:00am-5:00pm

Field Training

After the Academy you will go though in-house training. During the Field Training phase, deputy trainees will be assigned to a Field Training Officer (FTO). The FTO will provide training and demonstrate agency approved concepts. Deputy trainees will respond to various types of calls, including:

    • Domestic Violence
    • Sex Crimes
    • Death Investigations
    • Property Crimes
      • Burglaries
      • Robberies
    • Traffic Stops
    • Check on Well-Being
  • Duration
    • 14 Weeks (3 ½ Months)
    • Seven (7) Training Periods
      • Observation (2 Weeks)
      • Period 1-5 (2 Weeks Each)
      • Check Ride (2 Weeks)
