    What Does it take to be a Deputy?

    Minimum Requirements

    • Good work history

    • Accredited high school or GED diploma

    • Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English.

    • At least 20 years of age.

    • U.S. Citizen.

    • Valid driver’s license for the last year.

    • Must not have been convicted of a felony.

    • Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral character, false statements, perjury or domestic violence.

    • Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces

    • No marijuana use within the last year. Other drug usage will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

    • Must be in good physical condition

    Sworn Pay

    Effective October 1st 2024

    Deputy Sheriff salary starts at $62,566 ($30.07/hour), with a maximum of $100,089 annually.

    Benefits include uniforms, firearms, equipment, and a take-home car. Additional pay for education, shoe/boot allowance, shift differential, longevity, and specialty unit pay.

    Detailed Salary Components

    Base salary ranges from $62,566 (first year) to $100,089 (maxed out).

    Longevity Pay

    Begins at $500 annually at 5 years of service to $7,605 at 34+ years.

    Signing Allowances

    0-2 years of full time experience = $4,000 ($2,000 paid upon completion of Deputy Orientation,
    $2,000 paid upon completion of Phase I of Field Training Program).

    2-4 years of full time experience = $5,000 ($2,500 upon completion of Deputy Orientation,
    $2,500 upon completion of Phase I of Field Training Program).

    4+ years of full time experience = $5,000 ($2,500 upon completion of Deputy Orientation,
    $2,500 on completion of Phase I of Field Training Program, PLUS entry into pay plan at Step 2 = $64,771).

    First Year pay of up to $74,771

    Additional Allowances/Incentives include:
    Shoe allowance: $125

    Shift differential for midnight shift: $2,600

    Education incentive with 4-Year Degree: $960

    Master Deputy pay: $1,300

    Total compensation: $66,251 (first year) to $107,674 (maxed out).

    How do i Become A deputy?

    Sponsorship Opportunities

    Looking to get paid while you train? Competitive candidates are encouraged to apply for a limited number of paid sponsorships to a law enforcement academy. Recruits with no prior experience can apply to be sponsored. Meaning we will cover the cost of the academy and you earn earn $24.50 per hour while enrolled. Healthcare and other benefits of employment commence immediately upon hire.  After academy graduation, newly certified deputies receive their raise to the starting deputy sheriff pay of $26.51 per hour ($55,140 annually) and, if eligible, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office will facilitate the process for the new deputy to receive the State of Florida’s $5,000 Recruitment Bonus.

    • Sheriff’s Office pays 3% into retirement per year. After 30 years you will have 90% of your salary for your five highest paid years.
