Scent Kits
The Scent Preservation Kit® is used to pre-collect and preserve a person’s unique scent ahead of time and gives responding K-9 Units a head start during the search by providing the trailing dogs with an uncontaminated scent article. Your scent is as identifiable as your fingerprint to a trained K-9 and can last up to 10 years in our kit.
The preserved scent isn’t touched by other family members, pets, or responders. This means that K-9 Units do not have to go through the time-consuming dismissal process to determine who’s scent is actually on the article. They can begin searching immediately and with greater accuracy when every minute counts.
Everything you need to collect and securely store the scent of each family member is right in the box. Simply SWIPE the sterile gauze pad under the arms 10 times and place the pad in the specially-treated jar. Add the identification information to the label and SEAL the lid with the supplied tamper-proof tape. STORE the scent in the privacy of your home in a place away from high temps or direct sunlight. If you ever need it, you’ll have the best possible location resource to present to emergency K-9 responders.
In addition to collecting and storing a person’s unique scent, the kit now includes an Individual Preparedness Plan flash drive to store important identification information to help responders locate a missing person faster.
How Do I Get One?
To pick up a free Scent Evidence K-9 Collection Kit from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, please come to our Central Operations Building, 2500 W. Colonial Drive, and enter the lobby that faces Colonial Drive. The lobby hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
